The same can’t be said for Han Solo (Harrison Ford), who shows up following Kylo’s whupping at the hands of Rey to convince him to hurl his lightsaber into the ocean and assure him that he can still be a good guy (despite numerous attempts from both Han and Leia to make this point across the previous two movies). But Lando at least gets some moments of genuine heroism during The Rise of Skywalker. Billy Dee Williams reprises his role as Lando Calrissian, helping the members of the Resistance out of their stickiest situations (because Poe and Finn have apparently become even more grossly incompetent since The Last Jedi) and spewing some treacly platitudes about the value of having your friends’ backs when the going gets tough. Outside the question of Rey’s family tree, The Rise of Skywalker is littered with so many moments of cheap, fan-servicing nostalgia that it feels like a greatest hits montage than an original new film. Also, by making a huge deal of Rey’s imperial lineage, The Rise of Skywalker undermines Kylo Ren’s best line from The Last Jedi: “Let the past die kill it if you have to.” It’s way too close for comfort, and it feels like a cynical retread of the franchise’s most iconic moment. But after The Last Jedi made so much of Rey being a nobody born of filthy junk traders, the truth of her lineage is a lazy reveal that feels programmed to milk the same response from viewers as the reveal of Luke Skywalker’s parentage in The Empire Strikes Back. Rey’s lineage is not a problem in itself in fact, the granddaughter of Palpatine squaring against off against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), the corrupted grandson of Darth Vader, had the potential to raise compelling questions about whether we are doomed to repeat the decisions of our ancestors. The Rise of Skywalker’s intended bombshell reveal is that Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter her parents deserted her on Jakku in an effort to hide her from the Emperor. The bigger problem with Palpatine’s return, however, is his relation to Rey (Daisy Ridley).
